Meet Aaron "Uncanny" Phillips of Springfield, Illinois

Check out Art of War Battle League
First official Rap Battle League in Springfield, Illinois

Just Me.

Bright lights, big stages, and even bigger crowds were always my dreams. I just didn't know how I was going to get there. Basketball was my first love, but topping out at 5'8" and never having a consistent jumper killed those hopes. Hip Hop was always around, yet wasn't considered a career option until middle school. A burned copy of Luda's "Word of Mouf", a 7th grade talent show and a subsequent invite to rock the 8th grade dance sparked my life as a rapper. While my rhyme skills never garnered the attention of the masses. My work in and around the local scene allowed me to grow within the culture. Serving as everything from hype man to blogger, A&R, artist manager, and any other thing you can do in hip hop (outside of dance). As I still search for my niche within the game I will give you the world from my point of view and try to supply entertaining hip hop content in the process.

Welcome to my world,

Aaron "Uncanny" Phillips

The Jonathan Ferrell Shooting....And A Few Thoughts
H.D. Campbell
Officer Randall Kerrick (left), Jonathan Ferrell (Right) Photo Courtesy WCNC
Months after the verdict that acquitted George Zimmerman for the murder of Trayvon Martin, we now must deal with another shooting of an unarmed black man, Jonathan Ferrell.
Early Saturday morning September 16th, the Florida A & M graduate crashed into a tree while driving home.  As reported, the crash was so severe, Ferrell had to climb out of the back of the mangled car to get out.  He walked towards the first house he found and started knocking, startling the woman inside.  She dials 9-1-1 citing someone was trying to break into her house.

The police come minutes later and Ferrell runs towards the officers believing he was safe.  They first attempt to hit him with a stun gun.  When it proved unsuccessful, Officer Randall Kerrick opened fire shooting Ferrell ten times killing him.  Kerrick was arrested charged with voluntary manslaughter and released on $50,000 bail.  The story wasn't fully told until officers found Ferrell's car.
This is the story but the story doesn't end there.  This is not the first, the second, and not even the third incident of this kind.  An unarmed black man murdered with no provocation.   I compared this to the Trayvon Martin case because there are similarities in how procedure was handled by authority figures or lack there of.  The only difference is that Ferrell was a 24 year old Florida A & M graduate who played football for the school.  There was no history of trouble or drug/alcohol usage in his system the night of the crash.

This is yet another lesson needing to be learned.by all.  We as Black Males need to learn to proceed with more caution when dealing with police.  Police need to understand that things are not always as they seem and being Black in a neighborhood isn't against the law.  To go further, the act of shooting first and asking questions later isn't a good policy either.  There needs to be a better system of checks and balances when it comes to engaging individuals especially Black Males.
These so-called cases of mistaken identity need to stop.  Even if you did think Ferrell was a threat, there were other ways of handling it.   I personally know too many people who have been killed by excessive police fire or know someone who was killed by excessive police fire.  To be clear, I'm not trying to create a divide between the police and African-Americans.  For the most part, when they do their job, the police are quite efficient and I have nothing but respect for them.  However, I do see the other side.  I have been a victim of the other side.  Fortunately, I haven't had to be taken to jail or been in a situation where they were forced to draw their weapon but I have been profiled.
My fellow Black Males, a lesson.  When stopped, just answer their questions.  You don't have to be nice about it but don't be belligerent.   Use your own authority and get their badge number or name if you can.  When they check you and they're done checking, go and make a report.   It may not seem much at first but enough paperwork can go a long way.  It can make a difference between going home or becoming another statistic.

HIP HOP LIVES ON VOL.1 MIXTAPE HOSTED BY TALIB KWELI AND DJ MOS PRECIOUS

Hip Hop Lives On Mixtape.

The Hip Hop Lives On Vol. 1 Mixtape offers what's been missing in the hip hop world...hip hop. Talib Kweli and DJ Mos Precious bring their pure talents into this project bringing together a collective of  talented artists into the studio.  Each track offers a different experience merging old school and new school without abandoning hip hop roots.  Most importantly, this mixtape gives us talent from the streets of St. Louis and branches out from there across the country.

When asked what was the brainchild that brought her Talib together for this monster mixtape, she answered, "To be honest, the brainchild that brought me and Talib Kweli was me. I wanted to bring hip hop to the forefront so I pitched the idea to Talib and he said lets go."

DJ Mos Precious.

That turned into what I'm describing as a monster hit but critics are using words like "dope tape" and "salute DJMosP"  The tracks are very hard to ignore especially if you are a lover for true hip hop as those who listened agree. DJ Mos Precious and Talib Kweli made sure every artist selected was represented from all over and not just St. Louis.  She also gives a huge shout out to all of the indie artists who participated..

When asked what was her favorite track, she found the question hard to answer because she "hand picked each track on the mixtape."

Many of my favorite tracks come from artists Bo Dean, Troy Story, J. Cole, Freaky Legacy, and Ashley S. You get the hard tracks, the slow tracks, the tracks that take us back. When you listen to tracks such as 2 Faced by Troy Story or Not Yet by Bo Dean (and that's just the tip of the iceberg) as well as others, you will know what I'm talking about.  As I listened to all the tracks, I looked at the reviews for and the number of both spins and downloads. The numbers and reviews don't lie.  This mixtape is a hit.
Track Listing.

With the title ending with Volume One, I asked DJ Mos Precious about Volume Two.  She replied, "[The] volume 2 release is a secret but once i find out, Davisionaire blog will be the first to know."

If you haven't heard it, you need to go out and get it.  Interviews with some of the artists are coming soon.  You can get download this music from the following:

An Evening with SOSy.

There was excitement from beginning to end at the MVP Bar and Grill, St. Louis Saturday July 21 the moment the group SOSy entered.

The group SOSy (pronounced Saucy) has a style all their own as they displayed all night and on their new album called Dia Del Bronze.  The two ladies Brooklyn and Britney walked in with a force all their own.  With hits like 80s Baby and Swerve, these two ladies had a lot to celebrate.  In addition to their new album, there were giveaways including their own brand of hot sauce (a family recipe).

Their mom/manager Tiffany Pruitt recalls how the ladies were singing and performing even before they could walk.  Being a singer songwriter herself, Ms. Pruitt saw it as a “perfect fit” when the young ladies wanted to sing professionally.   Through voice lessons, dance lessons, and all of the other lesssons necessary, SOSy was ready.

Their overall style doesn’t mimic other styles.  In fact, the two lades make it their goal to be different as they proved.

The atmosphere of the album release party was as electric as SOSy’s sound.  The ladies sung a few sets and connected with their fans.  In an interview with their manager, she talked about SOSy’s energy and what drive it.  Ms. Pruitt describes it as a “staying focused” attitude.  That attitude showed at the party.

When asked about their style, the young ladies described their name and their music as bold, electric music for your brain.

Brooklyn goes on to say “I definitely think SOSy has a brand of their own.”

Brooklyn goes on to say how their music will always be different and….SOSy.

SOSy shut down the MVP as the ladies always do and gave an amazing performance.
